The Great Ride: Medora, N.D. Police Chief Celebrates 50 Years In Law Enforcement

Medora Chief of Police John Bey has hit a milestone most never do. On May 27, he celebrated 50 years in law enforcement. The day also happened to coincide with a six-week medical leave he has taken, so he assumed the moment had slipped. That the day had passed without recognition.

“I thought I had dodged a bullet” he said. “I didn’t want it to be a big deal.”

But Bey’s wife, in close collaboration with city officials, wasn’t going to let him get off that easily.

North Dakota Crisis Hotline Lethality Assessment Program

Calls are way up this year to the Community Violence Intervention Center’s crisis hotline, but the reason isn’t a jump in domestic violence incidents in Grand Forks. The calls are coming from law enforcement officers at the scene of domestic violence incidents as part of a new protocol called a lethality assessment program, which has officers calling the crisis line with the victim present at the scene of a report. “It certainly has increased our workload, but we’re really happy that we’re seeing more people getting connected to us and getting the information about what we can do to help.”
