Death takes no holiday on the states roads

Victoria Police on Friday, 09/06/2017 05:35 AEST

As police look to launch their statewide road safety focus for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend today they sadly reflect that five people lost their lives on Victorian roads during the weekend last year.

Consider 50, 46, 42, 45 and 60 – not just numbers but the ages of each man killed in four separate collisions throughout the state.

Operation Regal will see police look to the roads this coming weekend with a focus on; speed, fatigue, distraction, seatbelt non-compliance, drink and drug driving and most importantly, making sure motorists reach their destination in one piece.

Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Debra Robertson said there seems to be a deflection of responsibility when it comes to road safety – a headspace that it won’t happen to me.

“I’m sure we’ve all heard it before, I won’t get caught, just a little bit over is ok, I only looked at my phone for just one second; it’s incredibly disheartening to me and our members that people continue to think this way,” A/AC Robertson said.
