‘Last Drinks’ project popular amongst patrons

Queensland Police Service on Friday, 08/01/2016 11:09 AEST

Frontline police and Griffith University have been pleasantly surprised by the popularity of the partnered survey and breath testing of revellers as they leave entertainment precincts in the City and Fortitude Valley.

The Last Drinks project is part of ongoing research into people’s experiences at the precincts.

Griffith University Associate Professor Grant Devilly said the research was being conducted with the help of federal funding from the National Drug Strategy Law Enforcement Funding Committee.

“We have been seeking people out at the end of the night as they go home to see how their drinking night has gone,” Associate Professor Devilly said.

“So far 1125 people have participated in the project as they left to go home, with people very keen to take part. A quick survey conducted at train stations, taxi ranks and near popular venues includes the chance for patrons to undertake a voluntary breath test after estimating what their reading may be.”

“Our survey methodology generates very reliable response from patrons in the precincts at the right time of night, rather than unknown people who may not even visit the area responding to an email link at home or elsewhere.”

Officer in Charge Brisbane City Station, Senior Sergeant Corey Allen said police were already seeing some operational outcomes as the engagement increases positive interaction around areas linked to alcohol related violence.

“Frontline police working with the project team have had an excellent opportunity to engage people on such positive terms, when they are not in crisis or in trouble. We have had some encouraging discussions with people showing a high level of personal accountability and awareness,” Senior Sergeant Allen said.

“The average B.A.C. reading on people entering the precinct from the earlier Smart State project was approximately 0.07%, at this stage we are seeing marginal increase in the readings on exiting the precincts,” Senior Sergeant Allen said.

The results from the research engagement will help guide strategies into the future. Patrons are asked about a range of factors including how much they have spent and their previous involvement in alcohol-related incidents.

The project continues each Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in the City and Valley for the next few months.

Cyclist and drivers asked to share the roads

South Australia Police on Friday, 08/01/2016 06:16 AEST

Both cyclists and drivers are being put on notice that from tomorrow (9 January) police will be particularly focused on their behaviour when sharing the roads.

Figures released today show that more than 500 cyclists were injured in crashes reported to police last year (2015), plus four riders were killed.

Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti said the data painted a pretty bleak picture when considering road safety.

“Four cyclists died on South Australian roads in 2015, and another 69 suffered serious injuries which required their admission to hospital,” he noted. “That is an unacceptable toll and I believe we can do better as a community.

“Given the focus on cycling and cycling events this month, police are conducting a targeted operation to educate all road users and encourage people to share the roads.

“Operation Safe Cycling has a very simple message at its core – obey the road rules, irrespective of your mode of transport.”

The annual police operation is conducted in January with the popularity of the SANTOS Tour Down Under (TDU) event seemingly inspiring an increased number of riders to take to the roads.

“Motorists need to show patience and exercise care towards cyclists acknowledging the increased numbers on our roads for the TDU and during summer months,” Superintendent Fioravanti said.

“However, equally bike riders need to obey the road rules and not indulge in high risk behaviours that contribute to death and serious injuries on our roads.”

Cyclist injuries – 2015

In 2015, there were 518 cyclists injured in 510 crashes

  • 4 fatalities
  • 69 serious injuries (Admitted to hospital)

  • 445 minor injuries (Treated at hospital or by private doctor)

79% were male

89.2% were in metropolitan Adelaide

25.3% were Right Angle crashes

12.5% were Side Swipes

12% were Right Turn crashes

45.6% of crashes occurred on 60 km/h roads

39.4% of crashes occurred on 50 km/h roads.

The Operation is running state-wide until January 31.
