WA Police Officers Punched and Bitten During Arrest

Two police officers were injured while trying to make an arrest at a property on Flametree Street early on Saturday morning.

The male officers were punched, bitten and pelted with bottles and cans after attempting to arrest a woman for disorderly behaviour.

Sergeant Phil Nation said both officers suffered bite wounds and bruising and were awaiting the results of blood tests, while one was also treated for concussion.

He said the pair had been forced to withdraw from the street under a barrage of bottles and cans after a crowd of about 50 spilled out on to the street to confront them.

“They couldn’t effect the arrest, so they got back in the car as bottles and cans were being hurled at them — how we didn’t end up with a broken windscreen or other damage is a miracle, ” he said.

Sgt Nation said the woman who escaped arrest could not be located when other officers returned in the morning. However, he said her identity was known to police after she was cautioned earlier and efforts to find her would continue.

A temporary restriction on the sale of full-strength takeaway alcohol in Kununurra was implemented all day Saturday as a result of the incident.
