Travel wise – travel safe

Victoria Police on Sunday, 13/12/2015 06:00 AEST

An 11-year old girl and her 80-year old grandmother, a 47-year old mother of two, and a married couple in their 40s – these are five of the 244 people who have lost their lives on our roads this year.

Victoria Police today launched operation Roadwise and appealed for every Victorian to make a pledge to stay safe on the roads during the holiday period.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said he doesn’t want to see anymore empty seats at family dinners this holiday period.

“Ten people lost their lives on our roads during this period last year,” he said.

“As a community we need to look past the number, and think about the actual person who has died, a person whose family and friends are now grieving.

“Many will say ‘it will never happen to me’ but the sad reality is there will be more families mourning the loss of a loved one before the year is out.”

Operation Roadwise will run across Victoria from 13 December through to 3 January with police set to saturate the state’s roads during this high risk period.

Police will have speed, drink and drug driving, fatigue, distraction and seatbelt offences on their radar.

Ten high-priority police service areas will receive extra resources during the operation including Casey, Melbourne, Geelong, Glen Eira, Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Ranges, Benalla, Surf Coast, Wangaratta and Brimbank.

“I want people to travel smarter, not faster, this summer,” Mr Fryer said.

“We will be using all resources at our disposal to ensure we get anyone taking risks of our roads before they hurt themselves or someone else.

“Drug and booze buses, marked and unmarked police cars, mobile speed cameras, and motorbikes will be out in force, meaning you can be caught anywhere, anytime.

“You may get delayed during your journey but is far more important to arrive safely than it is to arrive on time.”
