Newcastle Woman Robbed By Police Impersonators

Two men impersonating police have robbed a woman’s home, sparking a warning from police for residents to stay vigilant.

The pair entered the Mann Street property about 6pm on Wednesday, telling the female resident they were conducting a search warrant.

As they searched her property, they took cash belonging to the woman before leaving in a navy blue sedan.

Brisbane Water police are appealing for any information about the West Gosford incident after the resident raised the alarm on Thursday.

The men have only been described as being in their late 30s and dressed in casual clothing.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

While cases involving criminals impersonating police are rare, NSW Police lists several ways to ensure officers are who they say they are.

Legitimate police badges will have a coloured backing and a separate photo ID card.

Contacting the station the officer belongs to with a number sourced independently can also help verify their identity.

Officers conducting a search warrant should provide a copy of the document outlining your rights and full details.

Searches will always be videotaped and an independent officer, who will handle any concerns, will be present.

All officers should be in possession of a police radio.
