Newcastle Drug Driving Shocks Police

More Newcastle drivers have been caught with drugs in their system than any other regional area in the state following a one-month police operation.

While one in six drivers who were subjected to drug tests in regional areas tested positive, that number was worse in Newcastle with more than one in every five testing positive.

In total, 152 drivers returned positive results from 720 tests conducted during a five-day period in Newcastle last month, police said.

In other regional areas where the tests were conducted such as Richmond, Port Macquarie and Orange, the ratio was one in every six while across the entire state the ratio is one in every 13.

Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said the results were shocking.
